Help with Afghan Resettlement

NorthStar is Partnering with NoVA RAFT (Resettling Afghan Families Together)

NoVA RAFT (Resettling Afghan Families Together) is a grassroots coalition of neighbors, co-founded by Natalie Perdue and Dan Altman, committed to supporting newly arrived Afghan families as they join our Northern Virginia community. They are partnering with LIRS (Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services), which is is expecting to process 50 families each week for the next several weeks.

So far, NoVA RAFT has helped to furnish 110+ homes for refugee families. More help is needed, including donating furniture and household items, moving furniture, purchasing items from the Amazon Wish List and Walmart Gift Registry, and supporting Afghan families in other ways where assistance is needed.

The top need right now is for FURNITURE DONATIONS and VOLUNTEERS.  To volunteer, all you need to do is SIGN UP and SHOW UP, no planning or prep is needed. You will be instructed when you arrive.

Donate Gift Cards

NorthStar is collecting gift cards to help support these home set-ups. Gift cards are needed for the set-up crews to use when getting a family settled. If there are any small items that the family needs that aren't available in the warehouse, the set-up crew can run to the store and pick it up. (Gift cards are not given to the Afghan families.)

The most needed type of gift card is a Visa gift card. Consider collecting gift cards in your church, neighborhood, or other group and drop those off at NorthStar (8730 Sudley Road, Manassas, VA) on Tuesdays, or any other day at the front office at Manassas Baptist in NorthStar's box. (Email Mary Beth Inman with any questions.) [More drop-off locations to be added.]
